A Day at the Theatre for Wallacetown Gardens

Residents from Wallacetown Gardens recently enjoyed a day out in Glasgow, combining lunch at a contemporary Scottish restaurant with a live ballet performance of The Snow Queen.

The trip followed a successful visit late last year to a ballet performance at Ayr’s Gaiety Theatre. After that outing, it became clear through everyday conversations that several residents were keen to experience another live performance. These regular check-ins are part of daily life at Wallacetown Gardens and play an important role in helping staff get to know residents, understand their interests and plan meaningful activities around them.

It wasn’t long before staff discovered that The Snow Queen was running for a limited time at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal. From there, residents and staff worked together to plan a full day in the city, including a shopping trip ahead of the main event. One resident had also shared a particular interest in traditional Scottish food, so lunch was booked at Ardnamurchan – Scottish Restaurant & Bar, chosen specifically to reflect that preference.

On the day, residents travelled together to Glasgow and enjoyed a relaxed two-course lunch, with haggis, neeps and tatties followed by sticky toffee pudding. The meal was clearly enjoyed by all and provided the perfect stop-off before heading to the theatre for the main performance.

The group then attended The Snow Queen, a ballet inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairytale. The production moves from lively winter scenes to the striking setting of an icy palace, telling a story of friendship and adventure through expressive choreography, detailed costumes and live music. For residents who had not previously seen a live ballet, it offered a new and engaging cultural experience.

The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all, staff included and highlighted how residents’ interests can shape meaningful experiences when they are listened to and acted upon. From the initial conversations, to planning the details of the day and enjoying the experience together, the trip showed how ideas shared by residents can quickly become well-thought-out, enjoyable activities.

Trips like this are a regular part of life at Wallacetown Gardens and reflect the wider approach across Enhance Healthcare. Residents are encouraged and supported to remain active, involved and connected to the world around them, with opportunities to explore interests, try new experiences and enjoy everyday life beyond the home. Southview Care Home Marks Major Step Forward in Care Inspectorate Inspection

Enhance’s Southview Care Home is starting off the new year on a high following a very positive Care Inspectorate report. The home saw its grades increase to Good (4) in four areas, while wellbeing rose to Very Good (5), marking an impressive two-grade improvement.

The report marks a significant milestone since Southview joined Enhance Healthcare last year and reflects the dedication of the team on the ground, alongside positive changes in leadership, investment, and a renewed focus on quality of care.

During the two-day inspection, inspectors observed practice across the home and spoke with residents, relatives, staff, and visiting healthcare professionals. The report states that people felt “safe, valued, listened to and emotionally supported,” with one relative telling inspectors that staff were “absolutely amazing, attentive, and caring.” Inspectors highlighted warm, respectful interactions throughout the home, noting that care was delivered with compassion, dignity, and respect.

The report went on to highlight how residents were supported to maintain independence and choice in their day-to-day lives. Inspectors noted that people’s wishes and preferences were used to shape how they were supported, helping residents feel heard and respected and leading to improved wellbeing and self-esteem. A wide range of activities and outings were available, guided by people’s interests and hobbies, alongside opportunities for community involvement and future holidays.

Mealtimes were also described positively, with inspectors observing that “mealtimes were pleasant and lively,” supported by good choice and quality of food. Snack stations were available throughout the home, allowing people to eat little and often in a way that suited their preferences.

Strong partnership working was another key theme within the report. Inspectors highlighted positive relationships with social work, advocacy services, and NHS colleagues, who described the service as “kind, communicative and person-centred.” The report also noted that regular audits and competency checks ensured staff were confident and skilled in supporting medication needs, giving people confidence that they received the right medication at the correct times.

Leadership was described positively within the inspection findings. Under the guidance of Registered Manager James Arthur, inspectors noted visible, supportive leadership with a clear focus on continuous improvement. The report highlighted that James and the wider management team maintained clear oversight through regular audits and a live improvement plan, enabling the service to “spot trends early and respond,” strengthening accountability across the home.

The report also reflected positive feedback from staff, who spoke about improved morale, strong teamwork, and feeling valued in their roles. Inspectors found recruitment processes to be safe and well structured, with staff learning and development described as well organised and contributing positively to safe, competent practice.

The environment was also examined with inspectors describing the home as clean, welcoming, and comfortable, with personalised bedrooms and shared spaces that supported dignity, privacy, and social connection. The report acknowledged that a number of infrastructure improvements had already been completed since Enhance took over, with further refurbishment planned to continue improving the environment for residents, families, and staff.

Staff at Southview were delighted with the inspection outcome and took time to celebrate the results together following the report. One member of staff shared, “We’re really happy with the results, everyone works hard to make sure our residents are happy and well supported.” Another added, “We’re really proud. It’s a great team to be part of.”

The findings provide a strong platform for continued improvement within the service, with the team at Southview remaining focused on developing further and building on the fantastic progress already made.

With every area assessed showing improvement and wellbeing rising by two grades, this report clearly shows how far Southview has come in a short space of time. The Care Inspectorate’s findings reflect the positive impact of clear leadership under James, alongside a team that listens, learns, and responds. Together, they have created a service where people feel supported, respected, and at home, where the pride and professionalism shown by staff is reflected in the experiences of the people they care for every day.

Winter Games Bring Festive Fun to Arran View

It’s been a fortnight full of fun and festive cheer at Enhance Healthcare’s Arran View, as staff and residents came together once again for the much-loved Arran View Winter Games.

Now a well-established tradition, the Winter Games began back in 2023 with a one-day Christmas scavenger hunt held in an empty unit. The response from staff was so positive that the admin team expanded the idea the following year, turning it into a week-long event to make sure everyone, across all shifts, could get involved. Classic TV-inspired games such as Supermarket Sweep, Deal or No Deal and The Generation Game brought plenty of laughs, with mystery prizes adding to the fun.

This year, the Winter Games returned bigger and better than ever, running over two weeks in the lead-up to Christmas, with staff favourites making a comeback alongside a brand-new addition – Arran View Monopoly!

2025 also marks the first year that residents will have their own Winter Games at Arran View. Following thoughtful consultation on how best to adapt the games and ensure they were accessible to everyone, the team worked together to create activities residents could fully enjoy, with staff on hand throughout to support, encourage and join in the fun.

Keen to make the resident games feel just as special, the Arran View admin team reached out to their local SPAR to help bring the Supermarket Sweep game to life. And Clare, the SPAR store manager, was delighted to do so: on hearing that residents would be taking part, she went above and beyond by securing an incredible £200 worth of prizes and hampers for residents to compete for. It was a generous gesture that perfectly reflects the strong sense of community Arran View continues to build, both within the home and with local businesses.

Working in care can be demanding, and moments like these really matter. The Winter Games show how a simple idea, shaped by some amazing staff and a whole lot of teamwork, can grow into something that brings people together, lifts spirits and creates a sense of fun and celebration throughout the home.

Quality Care Recognised as Deanston House Shines in Inspection

Deanston House Nursing Home is celebrating a fantastic set of Care Inspectorate results, reflecting the dedication, compassion and hard work of the entire team. Inspectors awarded the service a Very Good (5) grade for supporting people’s wellbeing and a Good (4) grade for its environment, recognising the strong relationships, high-quality care and welcoming atmosphere that define everyday life at Deanston House.

From the moment inspectors arrived, they noted how genuinely cared for residents felt. The team’s commitment to kindness and dignity shone through in every interaction they observed, with residents supported with warmth and encouragement. Staff were praised for knowing people extremely well and for taking the time to build meaningful, positive relationships. Families shared heartfelt praise too, with one relative saying, “It’s fantastic here, couldn’t fault it,” while another commented, “I worried my family member wouldn’t settle but it’s been great.” One family summed it up simply: “One of the best homes around, we are very happy with the care.”

Inspectors described Deanston House as “welcoming and friendly,” noting the strong sense of connection throughout the home. Visiting professionals echoed this sentiment, telling inspectors that residents were “well cared for, loved, and supported.”

Health and wellbeing were particular strengths highlighted in the report. Inspectors praised the home’s comprehensive healthcare assessments and the effective way staff work with community and external professionals to ensure residents receive timely, appropriate support. One healthcare professional commented positively on the quality of referrals made by staff, adding that families were always satisfied with the process. The dining experience stood out, with residents enjoying a tasty, varied and well-balanced diet. One resident shared their delight: “I’ve never seen so much food – I like the afternoon tea with home baking.”

The home’s setting was also praised during the inspection, with spacious lounges, bright bay windows and relaxed communal areas. Inspectors found the environment clean, tidy and well maintained, and were pleased to see residents personalising their bedrooms with familiar belongings that reflect their individuality. The home also incorporates good practice for people living with dementia, including clear signage, coloured cutlery and thoughtful adaptations that make daily life easier.

Finally, inspectors highlighted that Deanston House has successfully addressed an area for improvement identified earlier in the year, introducing a robust system to ensure consistent stock of over-the-counter medication and timely administration of prescriptions. This commitment to continuous improvement is another example of the team’s dedication to providing the highest standard of care.

McGonagall House Celebrates Staff Wellness with New Focus Room

McGonagall House has taken an important step in supporting its team by opening a dedicated wellness and tranquillity space for staff, known as The Focus Room. This newly created room offers a quiet, calming environment where staff can take a moment for themselves, reflect, or reach out for support when they need it. The initiative reflects the home’s commitment to caring not only for residents, but also for the people who make that care possible every day.

At Enhance, we always place residents at the centre of everything we do, and part of providing excellent, person-centred care is ensuring that staff feel valued, supported, and able to look after their own wellbeing. Working in care is an incredibly rewarding career, built on compassion and connection, but it can also bring moments of emotional strain, especially when forming close bonds with residents. McGonagall’s creation of the Focus Room recognises these challenges and addresses them in a positive and proactive way, offering staff a welcoming space that encourages openness, resilience, and reflection.

The room itself has been redesigned to feel soothing and restorative, complete with a relaxing beach mural on the wall to encourage a peaceful atmosphere. Staff attending the grand opening described the space as “calm and inviting,” somewhere they instantly felt able to pause and reset. Inside, staff will find contact information for mental health agencies, materials offering guidance on a range of wellbeing topics, as well as a designated spokesperson who will be available on set days for anyone who simply needs someone to listen.

Along with the grand opening, each staff member was also given a small wellbeing box containing a stress ball, encouraging quotes, a heart crystal, and a few sweet treats - a small gift that reinforces the home’s ongoing commitment to staff wellbeing.

Supporting mental wellness in care homes can have a significant impact on the quality of care provided. When staff feel emotionally well, they are more confident, consistent, and able to bring the high level of care that our residents rely on and expect.

Enhance Healthcare also benefits from a full-time Mental Health Liaison, Clare Armstrong, who works closely with all of our homes to ensure that both residents and staff have access to the right support whenever they need it. Speaking about the new Focus Room at McGonagall House, Clare said:

Panto Magic Lights Up Burlington Court

The Christmas spirit is already in full swing at Burlington Court, with residents enjoying a brilliant panto brought right into their own lounge for a festive afternoon of fun and laughter.

Thanks to the dedication of our Activities team, Geez a Break Productions transformed the space into a mini theatre, bringing their lively performance of The Snow Queen to life. The story followed brothers Kip and Kai and their mammy Cherry Bakewell as they took on the wicked Snow Queen in a magical adventure bursting with music, mischief and all the classic moments we expect from a good old-fashioned panto.

From the very first shout of “she’s behind you!”, it was clear that residents were ready to get involved – with cheers, boos, jeers and plenty of laughs around the room. A few residents even got up to dance with the cast, proving that the panto spirit has no age limit.

After the show, residents shared their excitement:
“It was great fun; I thoroughly enjoyed that!”
“I saw them here last year and they were great.”
“They were absolutely amazing – we always have a good time here.”

While the performance itself was fantastic, the real magic came from what it represented. Panto is a cherished tradition, something many of us remember from childhood trips, school outings or festive visits with family. Events like this are a key part of everyday life at Burlington Court, and the team works hard to make sure there’s always something meaningful for residents to enjoy. For many, getting out to see live theatre can be difficult due to mobility needs or the challenges of travelling, so bringing the panto into the home meant everyone could take part comfortably. Whether it’s live entertainment, group activities or visits from families and the local community, creating opportunities for people to connect and share experiences is an important part of supporting wellbeing.

As one of our newest homes within Enhance Healthcare, Burlington Court offers a comprehensive blend of clinical expertise and compassionate everyday support. With 90 beds and a full range of services, from dementia nursing care and complex nursing support to palliative and intermediate care, the home is designed to meet residents’ needs at every stage.

Residents Take Part in the 10th Anniversary of the Erskine Sporting Senior Games

Residents from Forbes House, Whiteford House, and Wallacetown Gardens were proud to represent Enhance Healthcare in this year’s Erskine Sporting Senior Games, marking the event’s 10th anniversary.

Originally launched in 2014 to celebrate the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, the Erskine Sporting Senior Games have become a highlight in the calendar for care homes across Scotland. The event brings together older adults from all over the country to compete in a series of fun and accessible sports, all designed to encourage physical activity, social engagement, and a strong sense of teamwork.

This year’s slightly altered format saw homes hosting their own competitions, with the overall scores from each location contributing to the national results. For Enhance Healthcare, the event became an exciting inter-home competition, bringing together residents across Forbes House, Whiteford House, and Wallacetown Gardens as they competed not just for medals, but for the all-important bragging rights.

Led by our very own in-house physiotherapist Piotr Zabkiewicz, the teams spent weeks preparing and practising for events including Target Darts, Ten Pin Bowling, Target Golf, Bucket Basketball, Paper Chase Pull, and Tin Can Bean Bag Toss. After extensive training, the big event days arrived, and our home athletes did not disappoint. Many residents achieved personal bests, with scores carefully measured and collated by our judging panel before being submitted to the Erskine Games judges.

The celebrations began with an award ceremony at Forbes House, officially opened by Robert Collins (Forbes House Manager). All participants received medals for their respective events, followed by the grand unveiling of the overall home winner — Forbes House!

But the excitement didn’t end there.

The winners from each home then joined teams from across Scotland for the national award ceremony at the Glynhill Hotel in Paisley. Although our Enhance homes didn’t secure a podium finish this year, it certainly didn’t take away from the enjoyment of the day. Residents made the most of the outing, listening to live music, meeting teams from other homes, and sitting down together for a lovely afternoon tea.

The Sporting Senior Games continue to highlight the importance of staying active at every stage of life. The games encouraged residents to move through achievable activities that helped improve general fitness, range of motion, and coordination, all essential for maintaining mobility and independence. Beyond the physical benefits, the sessions brought people together. Residents supported one another, shared encouragement, and enjoyed the friendly competition between homes, building confidence and community in the process.

A huge well done to all our residents who took part representing their homes — and Enhance — at this year’s Erskine Games! Thank you to all the amazing staff who helped make these games possible across all the home including our very own management teams - Robert for officially opening the games at Forbes House, and Megan (Whiteford House), Lindsay (Whiteford House), Sean (Wallacetown Gardens), and Angel (Forbes House) for presenting at our in-house award ceremony.

Calderglen House Celebrates Outstanding Care Inspectorate Results

We’re pleased to share an outstanding result for Calderglen House following its recent Care Inspectorate inspection, where the service achieved Very Good (5) across all three areas assessed.

This amazing outcome highlights the dedication of a highly skilled team and the strength of a recovery-focused approach that supports people to rebuild their lives in a safe, therapeutic, and compassionate environment.

Located on the outskirts of Blantyre and surrounded by private woodland, Calderglen House provides residential rehabilitation for adults aged 18 and over recovering from alcohol and drug-related addictions. Set within a beautifully restored Georgian mansion, the service offers a calm, structured, and nurturing setting where people can focus on healing, growth, and rediscovery.

Inspectors praised Calderglen’s “ holistic and trauma-informed ” programme, noting its strong balance of groupwork, one-to-one therapy, creative activities, and physical wellbeing sessions. This flexible, person-led approach “ helped people build resilience and life skills, not just manage symptoms .” Medication management was also commended as “ safe and person-led ”, with individual reduction plans allowing people to progress at a pace that feels right for them. As one person shared, “ I’ve been allowed the time and space to detox at my own pace, which has given me the chance to do a lot of work on myself .”

The depth of connection within the service was highlighted throughout the report. Inspectors noted that “ peer lived experience was embedded in practice, ” helping reduce stigma and encouraging engagement. Families also felt well supported, with relatives reporting they were “ better informed and able to support recovery at home .” Aftercare was another standout feature, with every person signing an aftercare agreement and receiving up to twelve months of continued support, ensuring nobody faces recovery alone.

Leadership at Calderglen was described as visible, approachable, and deeply committed to the service’s success. Inspectors recognised the positive culture across the home, where staff feel valued and supported, and where continuous improvement is genuinely embedded. Impressively, all three previous areas for improvement had been fully met - evidence of a leadership team turning feedback into meaningful, lasting progress.

The environment itself was also celebrated. Calderglen’s peaceful, woodland setting offers opportunities for walks, animal care, and quiet reflection - all of which play an active role in people’s recovery. Inside, the combination of spacious ensuite bedrooms, bright communal areas, warm dining spaces, therapy rooms, and an on-site gym creates a homely, uplifting atmosphere. One family member summed it up beautifully: “ It is a beautiful, peaceful setting… a very homely environment .”

Enhance Healthcare could not be prouder of the entire Calderglen House team. their compassion, commitment, and person-centred practice have created a service that stands out as truly special - one that listens, adapts, and places people at the heart of every decision.

Calderglen is changing lives for the better every single day and this report highlights just how hard the team works at making this the incredible service that it is.

Back on the Ice: Jill’s Return to Skating with Support from Whiteford House Staff

Staff at Whiteford House have been getting to know what truly makes their residents tick. One such resident is the incredible Jill, who was diagnosed with Huntington’s disease and has recently been back on the ice, returning to a passion she once knew so well as a figure skating instructor.

At Whiteford House, staff pride themselves on getting to know each resident as an individual – their stories, their interests, and what brings them happiness. It was during one of these conversations that Craig, a member of the Whiteford House team discovered Jill’s remarkable connection to ice skating.

Jill first began skating at the Magnum Centre when she was just five years old. Encouraged by her parents, she spent countless hours on the ice, later training under a former Olympic medallist. Skating quickly became her passion and profession, and she went on to teach for many years, helping others build confidence and balance on the ice.

After being diagnosed with Huntington’s disease at the age of 40, Jill eventually had to stop skating. Despite that, her love for the sport never faded, and she often spoke fondly about her time as an instructor.

The opportunity to return to the ice came about when carer Craig, who used to play ice hockey, struck up a conversation with Jill about their shared interest in skating. What began as a bit of chat soon led to a plan to help Jill revisit something that had once been such a big part of her life.

“When Jill talked about her time as an instructor, you could see how much it meant to her,” Craig said. “It was clearly a big part of her identity, and I wanted to see if we could bring a bit of that back.”

With support from the home’s management, Megan Borthwick, Craig began exploring how they could make it happen safely. The team reached out to the Galleon Centre in Kilmarnock, who were more than happy to help. The staff at the centre went above and beyond to ensure everything was safe, comfortable, and fully accessible.

“The team at the Galleon were fantastic,” Craig said. “They made sure we had everything we needed and couldn’t have been more supportive. It made the whole experience really easy and enjoyable for both of us.”

For Jill, the visit was a success from the moment she arrived. Being back on the ice, in the same kind of environment she knew so well, brought back fond memories of her years teaching. So much so, they ended up staying on the ice nearly two hours.

“It was brilliant, I had great fun,” Jill said. “We set up obstacles like I did when I was teaching, and I always look forward to going back.”

Now, after so many years away, Jill is back where she belongs. She and Craig have returned to the Galleon Centre several times since their first visit, often setting up small obstacle runs just like the ones Jill used when teaching her students. The visits have become a highlight for both Jill and the Whiteford House team.

Jill’s story is an amazing example of how the staff at Whiteford House deliver person-centred care in practice, finding ways to make activities meaningful, not just routine. It reflects the home’s wider focus on helping residents maintain their individuality, independence, and sense of purpose.

“We’re proud of our team for always going the extra mile and helping make sure that life at Whiteford House is as fun as we can make it,” said the home’s manager, Megan Borthwick.

The team also extended their thanks to the staff at the Galleon Centre for their support and enthusiasm in helping make Jill’s return to the ice possible.

Enhance Healthcare is celebrating another incredible year of recognition, with three of our own reaching the finals across two of the care sector’s most prestigious awards, the Scottish Care Awards and the Great British Care Awards (Scotland region).

At this year’s Scottish Care Awards, we’re proud to see Susan McKenzie from Clyde Valley shortlisted for Nurse of the Year and Wallacetown Gardens nominated for the Specialist Unit/Service Award. Representing Enhance at the Great British Care Awards, we’re also delighted to see Jeni McCulloch from Arran View named as a Finalist for the Care Home Worker Award.

These nominations represent the very best of Enhance Healthcare - compassion, dedication, and a shared commitment to improving lives across our homes.

At Clyde Valley, Susan McKenzie’s nomination for Nurse of the Year recognises her extraordinary leadership and unwavering commitment to person-centred care. Before Enhance Healthcare took over, Clyde Valley (then Monteith House) faced the threat of closure. Susan and the management team refused to give up, seeing potential where others saw challenge, and with the support of Enhance, worked tirelessly to turn things around. Since then, Clyde Valley has flourished, achieving consistently high Care Inspectorate grades and becoming a sought-after home known for its warmth, innovation, and stability. Susan’s professionalism, kindness, and deep respect for both residents and colleagues have made her a true role model within the Enhance family. Her introduction of Nutrition Champions and Future Care Planning has helped residents live fuller, healthier, and more independent lives.

Forbes House Impresses in Latest Care Inspectorate Report

Enhance Healthcare is delighted to share the fantastic results from Forbes House’s latest unannounced Care Inspectorate inspection. The purpose-built care facility was awarded two Very Good (5) ratings for Leadership and Staff Team, as well as three Good (4) ratings for Wellbeing, Setting, and Care and Support Planning.

Following a full inspection of the five key questions, Forbes marked incredible improvement in four out of the five areas assessed, as well as the successful completion of five out of six areas for improvement identified in the previous 2024 inspection.

Situated in the seaside town of Ayr, Forbes House provides full-time care and support for a range of individuals, from older adults to those living with mental health conditions and learning disabilities. The home is divided into communities - Ocean, Bay, Coast, and Shore - each designed to create a comfortable, supportive environment where residents can feel at home.

Inspectors visited in early October 2025 and were impressed with the developments implemented over the past year. They highlighted the “ kind, compassionate, and dignified support ” provided by staff, noting that residents were supported by a team who knew them well and treated them with warmth and respect. Leadership was described as “ responsive and committed to continuous improvement, ” reflecting a strong culture of teamwork and progress throughout the home.

Residents and families spoke warmly about their experience, describing the team as “ lovely, kind and friendly, ” “ brilliant, ” and “ They can’t do enough for you .” Mealtimes were praised for their relaxed, inclusive atmosphere, with residents commenting on the quality and choice of food: “T he food is great – there are lots of options, ” and “ I can get something else if I don’t like what’s on offer. ” Inspectors also noted that staff were well organised during mealtimes, providing sensitive support where needed and showing an excellent understanding of each person’s dietary preferences.

The report commended the nursing and care teams for their skill and professionalism, particularly in how they manage residents’ healthcare needs. Medication procedures were found to be safe and effective, with strong oversight and clear communication among staff and external professionals. Personal plans were described as detailed and person-centred, ensuring that each individual’s choices, routines and wishes were at the forefront of their care.

The home itself was described as clean, comfortable, and welcoming, with spacious communal areas, a bright café looking onto the garden, and outdoor spaces accessible from both floors. Residents said they felt safe and at home within the environment, and many had personalised their rooms to reflect their own tastes and interests.

Inspectors recognised the progress being made in developing meaningful activity within the home. A dedicated activities team has recently been recruited and is already working hard to build a structured programme of group and one-to-one activities for residents to enjoy. During the visit, inspectors observed several activities taking place and heard from residents who said they enjoyed taking part.

It was acknowledged that meaningful activity remains a key area for continued focus, particularly for those who may be more withdrawn or prefer spending time in their rooms. However, inspectors noted that clear progress has already been made, with the new team settling into their roles and introducing more opportunities for engagement and connection. Plans are in place to further expand the programme in the months ahead, ensuring that every resident continues to have access to activities that bring purpose, creativity, and joy to their day.

Inspectors praised Forbes House for its visible and approachable leadership, noting that managers and staff were consistently focused on improvement, communication, and learning. A comprehensive training plan ensures that staff have access to both essential and specialist training, with a particular emphasis on person-centred dementia care.

“ I am immensely proud of the staff who have worked hard to help achieve these fantastic results, we should all reflect on the journey that we have been on over the past year and celebrate our success. I am looking forward to what we can achieve over the next year together. Well done everyone! ”

“ I am so pleased with how well our inspection went and to see how much our teams hard work has paid off. It is a true reflection of the changes we have made over the last year and how well we have been able to implement and sustain them. It is a great feeling to know that the staff, residents and relatives are experiencing a great quality of care.”

A Very Special Visitor at Wallacetown Gardens

The residents of Wallacetown Gardens are well known for being animal enthusiasts.

Over the years, the home has welcomed everything from rabbits and guinea pigs to dogs and even a llama, so there’s rarely a dull moment when it comes to animal visits.

A particular highlight last summer was the weekly visits from Honeybea Farm, whose ponies quickly became firm favourites. Staff noticed just how much residents benefitted from these sessions, so when Wallacetown’s own domestic assistant Kaleigh let slip that she had a pony of her own at home, it wasn’t long before Matilda was trotting along to Wallacetown Gardens.

Kayleigh described Matilda as “a calm and gentle soul, perfectly suited to new places and people”. On her visit, residents headed out into the garden to meet her, where she lived up to her reputation.

“The horse was wonderful! I used to feed the horses every Sunday when I was younger so it brought back nice memories for me,” said Phillip.

Resident Donna agreed, adding: “It was lovely! It was a very settled horse. I enjoyed feeding it.”

While most residents were able to meet Matilda outdoors, some were unable to leave their rooms, but this wasn’t a hurdle for the calm and confident pony. Matilda took it all in her stride, happily walking through the home alongside Kaleigh to make sure no one missed out on meeting her. Resident Billy couldn’t stop smiling during his personal visit, while Adele and Stephen were especially delighted to spend time with her.

Animal visits are a much-loved part of life at Wallacetown Gardens. Every Wednesday, residents look forward to a visit from Gizzy the therapy dog, whose time at Wallacetown is always thoroughly enjoyed. These visits are a firm favourite with our residents, they spark conversation, strengthen connections and bring back fond memories, while creating plenty of new ones too. Animal-assisted therapy has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, encourage communication, and promote a sense of calm and wellbeing. For many residents, the opportunity to spend time with animals like Matilda or Gizzy provides comfort, companionship and a welcome boost to mood and confidence.

Moments like Matilda’s visit showcase perfectly what makes Wallacetown Gardens a fantastic place to live and work: staff and residents coming together to create meaningful experiences. By sharing a part of her own life, Kaleigh helped make an ordinary day extraordinary.

Successful Multi-Agency Exercise Showcases Collaboration and Safety at Whitehills

Emergency services and care professionals came together in East Kilbride on Monday 6 October for a major training exercise hosted by Enhance Healthcare at newly acquired Whitehills Care Home.

The large-scale event saw the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS), Police Scotland, the Scottish Ambulance Service, and Whitehills staff work side by side during a simulated emergency designed to test and strengthen joint response procedures.

Fire alarms sounded throughout the building as smoke machines filled rooms, creating a realistic environment for the full-scale evacuation. Enhance Healthcare staff were actively involved throughout the day, both supporting operations inside the building and taking part in the simulation itself. Actors played the role of residents both inside and outside the home, being guided to safety and treated by emergency personnel for simulated injuries and illness.

The scenario took place in an empty wing of Whitehills Care Home, which has recently become part of the Enhance Healthcare family and is due to undergo refurbishment. This rare opportunity gave all involved valuable insight into how different teams communicate and respond under pressure, strengthening coordination and safety for those in care.

SFRS Group Commander Gary Hoey said:
“It’s really important to bring emergency services together for training exercises like this one in East Kilbride to test our readiness to respond to serious incidents involving multiple casualties. By simulating scenarios, like a fire within a care home, we can identify areas that worked well or establish where we need to refine our protocols so that we continue to work together to protect communities. A huge thank you to our emergency service partners and also to Enhance Healthcare for the opportunity to organise a training scenario in a care home setting.”

Reflecting on the success of the day, Andy Jamieson, CEO of Enhance Healthcare, added:

Enhance Healthcare to Host Major Multi-Agency Training Exercise at Whitehills

Enhance Healthcare is proud to be working in partnership with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) to host a large-scale multi-agency training exercise at Whitehills Care Home, East Kilbride, on Sunday 6 October from 10:00–14:00.

The event will bring together SFRS, Police Scotland, the Scottish Ambulance Service and Whitehills staff in a live emergency scenario designed to test procedures and strengthen coordinated responses. The exercise will include a full evacuation drill, the use of actors as casualties, emergency service vehicles on site, and the presence of artificial smoke and fire alarms to create realistic conditions. To ensure this takes place safely, the training will be carried out in an unoccupied section of Whitehills Care Home, which is due to undergo a major refurbishment.

If you are in the area during this time, please be aware you may notice emergency vehicles and uniformed personnel at the site, artificial smoke from the building, and fire alarms sounding intermittently. This is a planned exercise in a controlled environment, with public safety as a priority. Access to and from local residences will remain open throughout, and we kindly ask that drivers take extra care and reduce their speed due to emergency service activity.

Hosting this exercise demonstrates Enhance Healthcare’s commitment to going above and beyond to ensure the highest standards of safety and preparedness for our residents, staff, and communities. But it is also an incredible opportunity for us as an organisation. Taking part in such a large-scale simulation allows us to experience first-hand how our own policies and procedures hold up under pressure, and to identify ways we can strengthen them further.

At the same time, the exercise provides Scotland’s emergency services with a vital opportunity to test and refine their coordinated response in a care home setting. The insights gained from this day will not only benefit Enhance Healthcare, but could also help shape how emergencies are handled across the wider care sector, building greater resilience and readiness for the future. Once the exercise is complete, a period of review and consultation will begin. This will look closely at what worked well, what can be improved, and how procedures can be made even stronger.

This event has taken months of planning, time, and coordination across all agencies involved. It is a credit to the professionalism and collaboration of Scotland’s emergency services that an exercise of this scale can take place, and it is inspiring to see multiple agencies working together so effectively for the benefit of those in care.

Residents Lead the Way in McGonagall House’s New Wellness Suite

Enhance’s McGonagall House has been hard at work this month, creating another welcoming space for residents to enjoy.

The purpose-built, 31-bed care facility in the heart of Dundee already boasts a beautiful salon and a tranquil relaxation suite, both of which were previous projects designed to turn underused areas into vibrant spaces shaped by resident feedback. This month, the team tackled another room that was in need of a rethink. They turned their attention to the shared wet rooms; practical, but underused.

Although functional, the rooms lacked the warmth and personality that residents had come to expect from their home. At the regular residents’ meeting, staff asked for suggestions on how the bathrooms could be improved. With an array of ideas being suggested, three themes were put forward: mountains, waterfalls, and the Amazon jungle. After some discussion, residents voted to choose two of the themes, one for each bathroom. Mountains and waterfalls came out on top, and the team got to work bringing those ideas to life.

The result is what is now proudly called McGonagall House’s Wellness and Relaxation Suite. The plain bathrooms have been transformed with murals of mountain landscapes and rushing waterfalls, while LED lighting, bath lights, and battery-operated candles create a gentle, soothing atmosphere. Bluetooth speakers allow residents to listen to their favourite music while they relax, turning what was once a clinical task into a personalised spa-like experience.

To celebrate the transformation, McGonagall House held a grand reopening with residents gathering to cut the ribbon, officially opening the new suite to the rest of the home. Since then, the space has already been embraced by residents, who describe it as calming, enjoyable, and far more inviting than before. Staff have noticed clear benefits too, reduced tension, less anxiety, and a more positive bathing experience overall.

For the staff team, seeing residents take ownership of the space has been hugely rewarding. What started as a simple suggestion has grown into a project that has made a real difference to daily life, encouraging more residents to use the baths and ensuring they can do so with dignity, comfort, and joy.

By continuing to reimagine underutilised areas and listening to the voices of those who call McGonagall House home, the team has shown how resident-led ideas can transform everyday spaces into something truly special. We pride ourselves on making sure our clients are at the heart of our care, and a huge part of that is listening to our residents. It is their home after all, and they should not only be consulted on changes but actively involved in the decision-making process. This ensures that every improvement reflects the needs and wishes of the people who live there.

Katie’s Wish Comes True at Forbes House

At Forbes House, the new Wishing Tree has already started making dreams a reality. When Katie placed her wish upon the tree, it came as no surprise to anyone who knows her what she was asking for. Katie is a lifelong Celtic fan who has supported “the Hoops” through thick and thin and her wish was to see a match live at Celtic Park.

As soon as Katie placed her wish on the tree, the Forbes team set to work. With everyone from management, activities and care staff all pulling together, it wasn’t long before she had tickets to see Celtic face Newcastle at Celtic Park.

In the days leading up to the game, Katie shared stories about her favourite players with staff and spoke often about finally getting the chance to see them play. Before long, her scarf was laid out, and she was on her way to Celtic Park.

On the big day, Katie travelled with Nadine and Jordyn from the Forbes team in the home’s minibus. The drive up quickly turned into the perfect rehearsal, with Katie leading the way as everyone got their vocal cords warmed up to a few songs before rolling into Glasgow.

Arriving at Celtic Park, Katie was buzzing, and the atmosphere was incredible. Photos outside the stadium were a must, but the real surprise came when she was given special pitch-side access, right into the thick of it. With more than 55,000 fans packed in, Katie cheered Celtic on as they put four goals past Newcastle in an emphatic 4–0 win. Between the goals, the drama, and the thunderous return of Kieran Tierney after six years away at Arsenal, it was the kind of match any fan would dream of.

Katie loved every minute of it. On the journey home, she couldn’t stop smiling or talking about the day, and it didn’t end there. Since that first trip, Katie has already returned to Celtic Park, with plans for more matches in the future. What began as a single wish has now become a regular part of her life, proving that the Wishing Tree creates lasting opportunities that bring real joy.

Katie’s wish shows what makes Forbes House such a special place to live. This wasn’t just about one day at Celtic Park, but about a team who go above and beyond to create experiences that matter. Celebrating Peggy’s 100th Birthday at Deanston

Deanston Care Home had reason to celebrate last month with a very special birthday for a very special resident. Residents, staff, friends and family all gathered to mark the 100th birthday of local legend Peggy.

Born and raised in Coatbridge, Peggy has always been a well-known and much-loved figure in the local community. Until the age of 99, Peggy lived independently in her own home before becoming part of the Deanston family. Known fondly for her years working as a Provident agent in Coatbridge, with such strong roots in the town, it was a fitting place to celebrate her 100th.

The celebrations started with decorating the home in style to mark Peggy’s incredible achievement, with flowers, balloons and music filling Deanston. A beautiful cake took pride of place, shared among guests as stories and memories of Peggy’s life were exchanged. Adding to the sense of occasion, we were honoured to welcome North Lanarkshire Depute Provost Bob Burgess and the area’s Deputy Lieutenant Alistair Peat, who both came to pay tribute to Peggy and present their best wishes.

Not only did the Provost and Deputy Lieutenant bring flowers and warm wishes, they also arrived with some special correspondence – Peggy’s official birthday card from King Charles and Queen Camilla. The presentation of the card was a highlight of the day and a fitting tribute to such an extraordinary milestone.

Since arriving at Deanston, Peggy’s incredible spirit has quickly made her a hit with residents and staff alike. She’s full of good humour, always ready to get involved and have some fun, and rarely misses a chance to get everyone up dancing.

Greencross Care Home Praised for ‘Very Good’ Wellbeing in Latest Inspection

Enhance Healthcare is delighted to share that Greencross Care Home, one of our newest additions to the Enhance portfolio, has received some fantastic feedback following its most recent unannounced Care Inspectorate inspection.

The 76-bed home, set in the heart of Cambuslang, providing nursing care for older adults and those living with alcohol-related brain damage, was inspected over the 5th and 6th of August 2025, and assessed in two key areas: Wellbeing and the Setting. Greencross achieved a ‘Very Good’ (5) rating for Wellbeing and a ‘3’ (Adequate) rating for Setting. Taken alongside previous visits, this means the home now holds overall grades of 6, 6, 5 and 3, an incredible reflection of the excellent care already being delivered as well as the amazing opportunities ahead for improvement.

Inspectors praised the warm, compassionate relationships between staff and residents, describing “significant strengths” in the quality of support. Families and professionals echoed this view, with one relative commenting: “We are really happy with the support. Staff know my mum very well and there is good communication between the staff and myself.” Another added: “Staff are brilliant – a well-gelled team who have people at the forefront.” A visiting professional described Greencross simply as: “This home has the best outcomes for people.”

Residents were seen to thrive through meaningful activities tailored to their interests, from learning new languages and attending wellbeing groups to enjoying music events. Staff spent dedicated one-to-one time with individuals, helping them feel valued and connected. A distinctive feature of Greencross is its informal wellbeing reviews, sometimes held in the company of the home’s pet rabbits, creating a relaxed and positive environment where people feel comfortable sharing their wishes and ambitions.

The report also highlighted the home’s proactive approach to health and emotional wellbeing. Staff were commended for responding sensitively to stress and distress, supported by clear care plans and regular oversight. Inspectors noted how small, personalised dietary changes had improved people’s physical health, confidence, and independence, while strong links with external professionals ensured residents’ wider needs were met consistently and effectively.

When looking at the setting, the inspection identified this as the next area of focus for Greencross, giving Enhance an exciting opportunity to bring Greencross’s environment up to the same high standards already seen in its care and wellbeing. Greencross already benefits from a range of communal spaces in The Lodge, including a cinema room, relaxation areas, and a large lounge and dining space. As one of Enhance Healthcare’s newest homes, investment in the environment is a top priority, with refurbishment plans being shaped in collaboration with staff and residents. Across Scotland, Enhance homes are known for their welcoming and modern settings, and Greencross will soon reflect that same quality.

The Care Inspectorate’s findings are a testament to the dedication of the Greencross team, who continue to create a culture where residents feel safe, respected, and able to flourish. With the support and investment of Enhance Healthcare, Greencross is well positioned to build on this success, ensuring residents benefit from both outstanding care and the setting they truly deserve.

Here at Enhance, we believe that activities should be meaningful, personal, and engaging, tailored to everyone’s passions and interests. It’s this focus that sets us apart, and David Hay’s story from Harbour Care is a perfect example of how the right activity can make a big difference.

When Harbour’s new Activities Co-ordinator Tracy joined the team, she made it one of her top priorities to learn about every resident. The activities they enjoyed, what they were interested in, the little things that made them tick, and what might inspire them to try something new.

David, a former shipwright apprentice with a love for making models (especially model boats), had been reluctant to join in activities, particularly outings. Rather than simply assuming David wouldn’t want to join in, the team looked for a way to create an inclusive, tailored experience built around his interests.

While there were no upcoming boat shows in the area, a railway model exhibition in Cupar caught Tracy’s attention. Knowing David’s appreciation for all types of models, she suggested the outing. His excitement was clear from the moment it was mentioned, and in the weeks leading up to the event, he regularly checked to make sure it was still happening.

David spent the afternoon enjoying the exhibits and even unexpectedly bumped into an old friend, giving them a chance to catch up. The day was rounded off with a wonderful meal at the Fisher & Donaldson café, a lovely way to round off what turned into a most enjoyable day for David and the activities team.

Since the trip, David has been more engaged in other activities within Harbour Care and plans are already in place for another outing, this time to Dundee’s Discovery Point, a fitting choice for someone with a deep love of ships and a proud naval background.

This is what makes the difference at Harbour Care, and across Enhance Healthcare. Our activities teams go beyond the usual calendar of events, taking the time to understand each resident as an individual, finding the right spark to inspire them. For David, that spark was a model railway show; for others, it may be something entirely different. What matters is that our staff never stop looking for ways to help residents connect, enjoy, and live life to the fullest.

Making a Paw-sitive Impact: Therapy Dogs at The Bughties

Residents at ‘The Bughties’ have been enjoying some very special visitors lately; they have four paws, wagging tails, and a gift for making people smile. Thanks to a new connection with Rod Stoddart MBE and his remarkable dogs, Mia, Clova, and Buddy, our home now enjoys regular therapy dog visits every Monday evening at 6pm.

Rod and his pack have been helping the wider community for well over a decade, bringing happiness to countless people as therapy dogs, and as part of a specialist search dog team called out in emergency situations. In recognition of his outstanding service to search and rescue, Rod was awarded an MBE in 2010. Today, he continues to give his time and expertise through Specialist Search Dogs, while also visiting homes, schools, and universities, where his dogs provide a calming and uplifting experience.

Mia and Clova are both fully qualified therapy dogs, while the newest addition, Buddy, is still learning the ropes from his experienced counterparts. These talented pups can do far more than follow basic commands: Clova, for example, can sense when someone is stressed or unsettled, or even detect when they’ve had a restless night. She’s also trained to walk alongside someone using a walking aid, offering companionship while encouraging fresh air and gentle exercise.

Dog therapy is well known for reducing stress and anxiety, boosting mood, and providing comfort to those who need it most. Many of our residents are lifelong animal lovers who have had dogs of their own, and it’s beautiful to see the joy and fond memories that come flooding back when they’re reunited with a friendly paw and a wagging tail.

With visits set to be a regular occurrence, the bond between residents and dogs will only continue to grow. We want to thank Rod, Mia, Clova, and Buddy for giving so generously of their time to our residents and staff. Their visits bring genuine comfort, companionship, and plenty of smiles. The bond forming between the dogs and our residents is something truly special, and we’re grateful for the positive energy and joy they bring into our home every Monday evening.

The Bughties is a 28-bedroom home in Broughty Ferry which spans 3 floors complete with a fully accessible life, peaceful gardens, and stunning views of the River Tay. Inside, residents enjoy cosy lounges, a welcoming dining room, and a varied activities programme designed to bring joy, connection, and meaning to each day. The visits from Mia, Clova, and Buddy are now a cherished part of that, and we're looking forward to many more Mondays filled with wagging tails and happy residents.

Clyde Valley Care Home Wins First Prize at Carstairs Gala Day

Leg warmers, Rubik’s Cubes, and a wave of neon, Clyde Valley Care Home made a big impression at this year’s Carstairs Gala Day with their Back to the 80s float, taking home 1st Prize for Best Motorised Vehicle in the village procession.

The idea for the float came out of a joint conversation between staff and residents, who worked together to develop the theme and plan the design. Over the following weeks, residents helped create the decorations used on the float and in the costumes, working closely with the activities team to choose colours, styles and materials. On the day itself, both staff and residents dressed the part, with homemade Rubik’s Cube outfits, leg warmers, and matching t-shirts tying the whole look together.

Staff and residents were over the moon with the result, the culmination of weeks of planning, and teamwork. Activities like this bring purpose and enjoyment, and much more: they encourage collaboration, support creative expression, and help build stronger relationships within the home.

The Gala didn’t stop just with the design for our residents either, they were front and centre on the day itself. Staff and residents alike took part in the village procession, making their way through Carstairs alongside other local community groups, floats and families. The Gala was a huge success and the Clyde Valley team were proud to be part of a village tradition that brings people of all ages together.

The Gala Day itself is the highlight of a full week of events in Carstairs, from wellie throwing and football, to quizzes and a community disco. The Saturday procession is the main event, with pipers, floats, pageants and the crowning of the Gala Queen drawing crowds from across the area.

Clyde Valley has taken part in Gala Day for several years, but the sense of pride in being involved hasn’t faded. Residents said they had a great time dressing up and loved being out in the community, waving to neighbours and soaking up the atmosphere.

The £20 prize and trophy marked the culmination of real collaboration between staff and residents. It was a chance to work towards something together, to represent the home proudly, and to take an active place in the life of the village. Events like this reflect the wider approach across Enhance Healthcare, where creativity, inclusion, and strong community ties are encouraged and celebrated.

Enhance Healthcare Raises Over £3,250 at First Annual 'It’s a Knockout' for Ayrshire Hospice

This summer, Enhance Healthcare was proud to take part in the first ever It’s a Knockout Challenge, all in support of the Ayrshire Hospice. With a fundraising target of £1,000 per team, we took on the challenge of raising £2,000 to enter two teams.

I n the weeks leading up to the big day, staff across our Ayrshire homes were hard at work drumming up support for this amazing cause. From bake sales and raffles to JustGiving pages and donation buckets at reception, the team across Enhance put in an incredible effort. Not only did they meet the target, they smashed it, raising a whopping £3,258.91 ! A true testament to the power of staff, families, and friends coming together for something that really matters.

Ayrshire Hospice is an incredible charity that provides specialist palliative care to individuals and families living with life-limiting illnesses across Ayrshire and Arran. Their support goes far beyond the clinical, offering comfort, dignity, and emotional wellbeing during some of life’s most difficult times. At Enhance Healthcare, we share many of those same values and know just how vital the hospice’s work is to the communities we serve.

This essential care doesn’t come easily. With only 41% of their costs funded by the NHS and around £25,000 needed each day to keep their services running, Ayrshire Hospice relies heavily on the generosity of donors and community fundraising. The £3,258.91 raised by our teams will go directly towards helping them continue their life-changing work.

With that in mind, it wasn’t long before the big day arrived. Our eager staff donned fancy dress, and arrived bright and early at Dam Park to see the obstacles start to inflate. The teams were split and set off on a foam-filled day of fun in the sun (mostly, with one dramatic downpour for good measure!).

Despite a huge effort from both teams, we didn’t quite make the podium in the main games, but we were delighted to take home 3rd place in the Best Gazebo competition (no surprise there, we do love a strong gazebo setup!).

While the teams tackled the inflatable course, staff, residents, friends, and family gathered in the stands to offer their support, encouragement, and exceptionally good humour. It was a fantastic day out for all, and a real snapshot of the community being built in our homes across Enhance.

Although It’s a Knockout is over, our support for Ayrshire Hospice continues. If you’d still like to contribute, donations can still be made online or in person, every pound makes a real difference to local people and their families at incredibly difficult times in their lives.

Wallacetown Gardens Celebrates Double ‘Very Good’ Ratings Following Care Inspectorate Visit

Wallacetown Gardens has been praised by the Care Inspectorate following a recent unannounced inspection, receiving two ‘Very Good’ (5) ratings for Quality of Environment and People’s Health and Wellbeing.

Located in the seaside town of Ayr, the care home provides specialist support for adults aged 18–65 living with complex and life-limiting conditions, including Huntington’s, acquired brain injuries, learning disabilities, physical disabilities, and enduring mental health needs. The inspection highlighted the home’s strong emphasis on promoting independence, dignity, and meaningful activity, values that sit at the heart of day-to-day life at Wallacetown.

Inspectors found “significant strengths” in the physical environment, noting that the home has been designed to be both functional and welcoming. With 20 modern ensuite bedrooms spread across two floors and access to a secure garden, the layout supports both privacy and social connection. Shared spaces, including lounges and dining areas, had been recently redecorated to create a more homely atmosphere, changes that residents were fully involved in planning.

The report also highlighted designated activity spaces, including a craft area, gaming zone, nail bar and a dedicated “nightclub” area, which inspectors noted were actively used and enjoyed by residents. Outdoor areas were also praised, particularly the new BBQ and seating area which had been added following resident feedback.

In relation to health and wellbeing, the Care Inspectorate observed staff providing warm, respectful and professional support, noting their “very good knowledge” of each person’s needs, goals and preferences. Inspectors were satisfied that residents were encouraged to live as independently as possible, supported by enablement-focused care plans and meaningful one-to-one engagement.

The home’s approach to activity and daily structure was also commended. A lifestyle manager and dedicated activity staff lead a varied programme that includes Zumba, cycling, group exercise and ‘Mindful Mondays’, with holidays and outings planned in close consultation with residents. Inspectors were particularly impressed by how involved people were in shaping their own routines and influencing the wider service, through regular surveys, discussions, and opportunities to give feedback.

Health needs were described as “carefully monitored”, with effective systems in place for medication management, infection prevention and collaborative working with external health professionals such as GPs, nurses, and podiatrists.

Since becoming part of the Enhance Healthcare group in 2023, Wallacetown Gardens has continued to build on its strong foundations, driven by a team deeply committed to person-centred care. The Care Inspectorate’s findings are a testament to the dedication of staff and management and a clear reflection of Enhance Healthcare’s values in action.

Residents and Inspectors Praise Lochside Manor in Latest Report

Enhance Healthcare is delighted to share that Lochside Manor has received a highly positive outcome following its most recent unannounced Care Inspectorate inspection. Set in the vibrant community of Bargeddie, with easy access to both Coatbridge and Glasgow, Lochside Manor continues to offer a nurturing, inclusive environment where both older people and younger adults are supported to live fulfilling lives.

The inspection, carried out on 17th and 18th June 2025, focused on two key areas: Wellbeing and the Setting. Lochside achieved a score of 5 (Very Good) for Wellbeing and 4 (Good) for its Setting, an achievement that reflects the team’s ongoing dedication to high-quality, person-centred care.

Inspectors spent time observing practice, reviewing documentation, and speaking with residents, relatives, staff, and external professionals. What emerged was a consistent picture of a friendly, well-run home where people feel genuinely respected and cared for. Residents spoke warmly about their experience, describing staff as “lovely, respectful and well trained” and the home itself as “well-run,” “welcoming,” and “a place where I feel happy and secure.”

Others commented on the quality of the food, the friendly atmosphere, and the support they received to stay active and engaged: “The food is fantastic, it’s so good I’ve put on weight!” and “Activity staff encourage me to go on outings and lunches. I’m lucky I can get out every week, weather permitting.”

The strong, trusting relationships between staff and residents were frequently highlighted during the inspection. Staff were seen interacting with residents in a warm and respectful manner and clearly knew them well. This personalised approach was noted as a key strength across the home’s two specialist units, Glenmuir and Skye, which cater to a blend of needs including mental health support, learning disabilities, and physical health conditions.

External professionals were equally impressed with the home’s environment and the quality of communication from staff. One noted: “Staff always seem happy and well supported by leadership,” while another praised the improvements being made to the environment, saying: “They’ve added a kitchen to a communal area to make it more homely and allow staff to be more present.”

The inspection also commended the progress made in oral health care. While recognising that further improvement is still ongoing, inspectors saw clear evidence of documentation, staff accountability, and a helpful partnership with a visiting oral health specialist, a testament to a well trained team that listens, adapts, and develops.

When assessing Lochside’s setting, inspectors described the home as “clean, tidy, and free of clutter”. Inspectors noted that most communal areas were clean, welcoming, and well maintained, with some areas already refurbished to a particularly high standard. It was also noted that where updates were still needed, a refurbishment plan was in place and actively being delivered with the support of management and Enhance Healthcare. Residents also benefited from access to two enclosed outdoor spaces, ideal for socialising, relaxing, or simply enjoying the sun.

With capacity for 45 residents, Lochside Manor was home to 38 people at the time of inspection. Its blend of modern private rooms, shared social spaces, and a supportive, can-do ethos offers a unique balance of comfort, care, and community. Staff were seen to go the extra mile to ensure every resident feels included, empowered, and respected.

The inspection report is a well-earned recognition of the hard work and dedication shown by the Lochside Manor team. Enhance Healthcare is proud to celebrate this achievement and remains committed to delivering high-quality care across all its homes, led by people who believe in helping residents turn “I can’t” into “I can. ”

Wishing Big at Forbes House

We’ve been celebrating a new creative collaboration at Enhance Healthcare: Forbes House has been giving residents the opportunity to share their hopes and dreams, and watch them come to life with their brand-new wishing trees.

Staff at the purpose-built home recently partnered with local community group Ucan to create handmade wishing trees for each of the home’s four newly redesigned units. Built over several weeks by members of Ucan, the bespoke trees now stand proudly in Coast, Shore, Bay and Ocean, each offering a space for residents to write and display their personal wishes.

The idea behind the project was simple: to give residents a way to express the things they’ve always wanted to do or revisit, whether big, small or wonderfully unexpected. Forbes House approached Ucan, a local social enterprise, whose mission is to empower a range of individuals to achieve independence by equipping them with practical skills to lead fulfilling lives. With values so closely aligned to Forbes House, and Enhance Healthcare, the partnership made perfect sense, and the team set off with a focus on creating something that would genuinely impact people day-to-day.

When the trees were completed, management, staff, and residents all came together to welcome the Ucan team for an official unveiling ceremony. The residents were absolutely delighted with their wishing trees, and the Ucan team revealed each one to thunderous applause. For both residents and staff, it was a special event that celebrated imagination and connection in the community.

Already, the trees have sparked some brilliant ideas: one resident hopes to visit Celtic Park for a stadium tour; another dreams of seeing Daniel O’Donnell perform; and in true Forbes House fashion, there’s even been a cheeky request for belly dancers. It’s great to see how this idea has been encouraging conversations and getting residents into the mood for some fun!

Staff say they’re also excited to see what other wishes appear in the coming weeks. While the home has always encouraged residents to share suggestions and tailor activities to their interests, the wishing trees offer a visual, shared space to express a request, one that may inspire others to step forward when they see wishes coming true around them.

Projects like this show how deeply rooted the values of independence and reablement are at Forbes, and across all of Enhance Healthcare. By working hand-in-hand with the local community, and listening closely to the people who live in our homes, the team continues to create opportunities that feel personal, meaningful, and full of possibility. For the residents of Forbes House, every wish on the tree is a reminder that they're not only cared for, but encouraged to dream, and supported to take the next step towards making those dreams a reality.

Lochside Manor’s Wellbeing Days: Caring for the Carers

Great care starts with a happy, motivated team. And while our focus is always on delivering person-centred care for residents, we know that this can only happen when our staff feel supported, valued, and looked after too.

That’s why Lochside Manor has introduced monthly Staff Health and Wellbeing Days, designed to give colleagues a chance to relax, recharge, and feel genuinely appreciated for the incredible work they do.

The initiative, led by Lochside’s management team, is already proving a hit. The first session offered staff drop-in hand therapy and mini manicures from a visiting practitioner, complete with relaxing hand massages and nourishing cuticle oils.

“It was great to get a bit of a pamper and have our nails done,” said one team member.

The second session saw Lochside’s in-house hairdresser open the salon exclusively for staff, offering free trims and styling, a treat that brought in team members even on their days off.

Now, plans are well underway for future sessions, with staff input helping to shape what’s next — from high tea afternoons in the garden lounge to guided meditation and mindfulness classes. Lochside’s warm, welcoming environment makes these wellbeing moments feel extra special, relaxed, informal, and genuinely appreciated.

Of course, wellbeing days are just one part of the picture. Lochside also offers opportunities for personal growth and development, from on-the-job training and mentoring to more formal pathways for those looking to progress their careers in care. It’s all part of creating an environment where people feel they can belong and grow.

Making Memories with Summer Holidays at Wallacetown Gardens

Many of us will be looking forward to our upcoming summer holidays, our chance to unwind, explore new places, and try something different.

Likewise, for our young adults living at Wallacetown Gardens in Ayr — our purpose-built Enhance Healthcare home supporting people with additional needs and disabilities — summer holidays are a way of encouraging exiting new experiences.

Over the past year, the team at Wallacetown has made something remarkable happen; three resident-led holidays to destinations across the UK — Oban, Edinburgh, and most recently, sunny Blackpool.

These trips were designed with residents from the very beginning and the planning started long before the suitcases were packed. Residents sat down with staff to talk about the kind of holidays they dreamed of, where they wanted to go, what they wanted to do, and how they imagined spending their days. Whether it was beach walks, bingo, sightseeing or just relaxing in a hot tub, the trips were shaped by the people who would experience them.

“It was really important that these weren’t just holidays arranged for our residents,” says Deputy Manager Sean McGill. “We were there to support, but all the choices were theirs.”

The first trip to Oban, set the tone for the summer. Residents explored the coast, enjoyed scenic walks, and relaxed in hot tubs in the evening. In Edinburgh and Musselburgh, they had bingo nights, pamper evenings, movie sessions, shopping trips and a visit to the botanic gardens. In Blackpool, residents enjoyed a packed schedule: from the arcades and Madame Tussauds to beachfront strolls and, for one resident, a lifelong dream come true - a trip to the top of Blackpool Tower.

“When she finally did it, we were all a bit emotional,” Sean recalls. “It meant so much to her.”

Behind the scenes, these trips are a huge undertaking. With staff providing 24-hour support, every detail must be carefully planned ensuring medication management, accessibility, contingency planning, and making sure each resident’s individual needs are fully supported. At Wallacetown, the team embraced this challenge wholeheartedly, giving residents the opportunity to live life to the fullest.

“It’s a lot of work,” Sean says, “but seeing our residents smiling, confident, and relaxed in a new environment, that’s what it’s all about.”

This initiative reflects everything Enhance Healthcare is about: supporting independence, enabling choice, and creating genuinely meaningful experiences for the people who live in our homes. The team at Wallacetown Gardens have shown what’s possible when staff are empowered to think creatively and go the extra mile. With careful planning, dedication, and a shared belief in person-centred care, they’ve helped residents experience new places, build confidence, and create lasting memories.

Planning for the next trip is already underway, and we can’t wait to see where they end up next!

Residents’ Champion’s Board at McGonagall House: Sharing Passions, Building Confidence

Every resident deserves to be at the heart of their care journey. And at McGonagall House, this commitment includes meaningful activities. The new Residents’ Champion’s Board was created to empower residents to lead and share their passions through resident-led activity groups, creating a vibrant community of learning and friendship.

The idea is beautifully simple but deeply impactful. The Residents’ Champion’s Board invites residents to teach classes or workshops based on their hobbies or skills, encouraging others to join in and discover new interests. Each Champion’s photo and a short introduction are proudly displayed on the board at the entrance to McGonagall House, celebrating their talents and inspiring others to get involved. Supported by staff, these workshops bring people together to learn, share stories, and have fun.

One such resident that has seized the opportunity is Frank, a gifted musician who brings the joy of music through singing and playing guitar, mouth organ, and keyboard.

“It makes me feel accomplished and free to express myself,” Frank says.

“Seeing others enjoy the music and even dance lifts my spirits. I played in pubs and clubs back in the day and won Best Newcomer in 1982. Those were the best times of my life. What would we do without music?”

Cath’s gardening sessions have helped residents reconnect with nature, fostering calm and creativity.

“Gardening keeps me busy and helps with everyday stresses,” Cath explains.

“I grow fruit, vegetables, and herbs both at our plot in Law Hill and in McGonagall’s own garden. Rain or shine, the plants need care, it’s very therapeutic.”

Art classes led by Barrie and knitting sessions with Aileen have added even more colour and texture to the board’s growing list of activities, giving residents new ways to express themselves and connect with others. For many of the Residents’ Champions, the experience of teaching has brought a renewed sense of purpose, pride, and confidence.

Staff have witnessed these positive changes every day. Alison Kerr, Domestic Assistant, shares:

“The Champions Board has brought clients together in a way I hadn’t seen before. It’s helped boost confidence and self-esteem, giving residents a chance to teach and learn — from gardening and singing to darts and pool. It’s a brilliant way to discover hidden talents.”

Stacey Green, Head Housekeeper, adds:

“It’s been fantastic seeing residents support one another and get involved. The Champion’s Board really helps build a sense of community and encourages lifelong learning.”

This initiative has quickly become a highlight at McGonagall House, and the sense of accomplishment and camaraderie fostered by the Residents’ Champion’s Board is clear to everyone involved, from residents and staff to visiting professionals.

Looking ahead, McGonagall House is excited to grow the Board even further, with plans to introduce new activities and more opportunities for residents to lead and learn.

They are also launching a Staff Champions Board, giving team members the chance to share their own skills and passions with residents and colleagues alike. Our care homes are places of support, rooted in their communities, and with relationships that enrich the lives of residents, staff, and neighbours alike.

At Arran View in Saltcoats, this spirit is part of everyday life. From supporting local families at Christmas through The Giving Tree charity, to raising money for Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland, the team works hard to build meaningful connections with the people around them.

Earlier this year, one story stood out; a real reminder of what can happen when communities pull together. We were proud to support a fundraising effort for Taylor, Kaitlyn and Alex, three talented young dancers from the local CSDA/CCSD dance school, all with strong family ties to Arran View. Taylor and Kaitlyn are granddaughters of Elizabeth McEwan, and Alex is the granddaughter of Helen Murdoch, both long-standing and much-valued members of the home’s kitchen team.

The girls have danced since they were toddlers, competing in Pom, Lyrical, and Hip Hop in competitions up and down the UK. After years of training, competing and dedication, they earned a place at the Allstar Worlds Dance Competition in Orlando, Florida, a huge achievement, but one that needed serious fundraising to make possible.

“When I asked if the company would consider sponsoring my granddaughters, I didn’t know what to expect,” said Elizabeth. “But the support we received was amazing.”

Arran View was proud to contribute, alongside many others from across the Saltcoats community, to help make that dream trip a reality. With enough funds raised, the girls were on their way to the world stage where they won the World Championship (with podium places in other categories) and secured their place in the 2027 competition!

It was an incredible result for the dancers and a moment of pure elation and pride for their families. It’s also a reminder that care homes don’t exist in isolation. The bonds we build around us are what make homes like Arran View feel like part of the community and show how even small acts of support can ripple outward, creating something bigger than any one person or place.

This month, residents at Bughties in Broughty Ferry took a virtual trip to Japan, without ever leaving their chairs. The home was transformed into a Japanese-inspired setting, complete with themed decorations, traditional music, and even a dedicated ‘departure lounge’ to set the scene.

Our fantastic kitchen team prepared a beautiful Japanese lunch menu, while activity staff dressed in traditional kimonos to fully immerse residents in the day. Through online video tours, sensory touches, and a themed quiz, residents were able to explore the sights, sounds, and flavours of another culture from the comfort of their home.

Wallacetown Gardens helps resident on his path to independence.

Enhance Healthcare is proud to celebrate the incredible achievement of Mikey, a resident at Wallacetown Gardens, who has taken his first step towards his goal of independent living by successfully securing a volunteer role at his local Cancer Research shop.

Since moving to Wallacetown Gardens in 2023, Mikey has been working toward his goal of living independently and one day working in his favourite store, GAME. Thanks to the assistance of some dedicated staff and the home's personalised approach to care, he’s already making that dream a reality.

Wallacetown Gardens is a purpose-built care facility with dedicated spaces for residents to practise essential life skills, everything from cooking and laundry to communication and confidence-building. But when it came to gaining real-world work experience, Mikey needed to step outside the home and into the community.

“We’ve been assisting Mikey for a few years now and we know how much he wants to live and work in the community,” said a member of staff.

“When we heard about a volunteering opportunity with Cancer Research through the VASA website, we knew it could be a brilliant fit for him.”

With support from staff, Mikey completed an online application and, after a short wait, was invited to interview, an exciting but unfamiliar experience. The team helped him prepare, practising interview questions and helped build his confidence before the day. As expected, Mikey did brilliantly and secured the position working in the shop.

“I work at the front and back of the shop,” Mikey said proudly.

“I like hanging clothes and putting them into sizes. I have new friends I’ve met there, and I’m always looking for Pokémon clothes!”

The team at Wallacetown Gardens continue to support Mikey every step of the way, including organising his transport to and from shifts using the home’s minibus. Since starting, staff say the difference in Mikey has been clear.

“It’s been really good for him. You can see he’s more confident,” one team member shared.

“He’s been getting on so well since coming to Wallacetown, and this is another big step on his journey to living in the community. We’re really proud of him.”

With his new-found confidence and skills, Mikey was recently successful in securing a place at Ayrshire College to study Creativity and Design, a course he’ll attend alongside his volunteer work, with continued support from the Wallacetown team.

Forbes House helps resident take trip down memory lane!

At Enhance Healthcare, we believe that person-centred care is about creating meaningful moments and opportunities that enrich the lives of our residents. The new Activities Team at Forbes House have taken this to heart, spending time getting to know each resident and learning what brings them joy.

Since joining Forbes House, Jordyn and Olivia have brought a fresh energy and creativity to the Activities Team making it a top priority to build meaningful connections with residents, finding out what makes them smile, what memories they treasure, and what experiences might still be on their wish list.

One such resident they’ve been getting to know is Bill, who has been living at Forbes House since May 2023 after being diagnosed with dementia. Bill’s daughter, Anne, shared how important his childhood home in Tollcross, Glasgow was to him. Although the family later moved to Irvine, Bill always spoke fondly of his early years, especially the memories of climbing over the park gates during the war when the blackout was in effect. “It was always dark in the park,” Anne recalled him saying. “No lights there so they were safe!”

With support from Jordyn and Olivia, and a bit of careful planning, a special trip was arranged to help Bill revisit the place that meant so much to him.

On a bright and sunny Monday morning, Bill, Anne, and his niece Tracey set off from Forbes House to Tollcross Park in Forbes’ own minibus, accompanied by the Activities Team. From the moment they arrived, it was clear how much the visit meant to Bill. Their walk began at the old Bandstand and Greenhouse, where the family took some lovely photos together. Bill seemed energised, eager to continue exploring the park that had been such a big part of his youth.

As they reached the front gates, Anne shared more of Bill’s stories from his childhood, memories that felt even more vivid now that they were standing in the places he once knew so well. They even stopped to admire the flats across from the park where Bill grew up, which still had the original tiled hallways he remembered so well.

After their nostalgic walk, the group stopped for lunch at the nearby Sports Centre, which overlooked the area where Bill had grown up. As they shared a meal together, Jordyn and Olivia had the chance to listen to more stories from Anne and Tracey about Bill’s life, gaining valuable insights into the man behind the memories. Bill, content with his lentil soup and roll, seemed right at home, surrounded by familiar faces and places. For the team, this was a meaningful opportunity to get to know Bill even better, helping them continue to support him in a truly personalised and engaging way.

“It was incredible to see Bill getting the chance to revisit a place that clearly means so much to him,” said Jordyn and Olivia. “We feel really lucky to be able to help make these moments happen, it’s what this role is all about.”

At Deanston Care Home, Fridays aren’t just the end of the week, they’re something to celebrate. For years now, every Friday afternoon has been marked by a tradition that brings residents, staff, and the wider home together for an afternoon of connection, fun, and familiar comforts.

The weekly Friday party kicks off in the beautiful front lounge of Deanston’s converted sandstone townhouse. It starts with music and the opening of the mobile bar, where residents can request their favourite drinks, be it a soft drink or something a little stronger! From there, residents and staff put on their dancing shoes and join in the fun, singing and dancing together, whether up on their feet or from the comfort of their chairs, as they celebrate the start of the weekend in true Deanston style.

Later in the evening, everyone gathers for a proper chippy tea, served fresh and hot. It's a simple tradition, but one that means a lot to the people who call Deanston home. As one resident put it:

“It’s been a tradition for as long as I’ve been here, and I hope it remains so for many years to come.”

The entertainment may shift with the seasons - some weeks might feature a visiting musician, or others a performance from a local group - but the sense of community and connection is ever present. Even residents who may not usually join in with daily activities or outings are often drawn out by the relaxed, social nature of the Fridays. It’s a time for everyone to be together, regardless of ability or background.

“I’ve only been here a few months, but Fridays are already my favourite day. It’s something we all look forward to,” said another resident.

These gatherings promote more than just good fun, they offer social interaction, mental stimulation, and a sense of belonging, all essential elements of high-quality care. For many, the music and shared meals spark memories and provide comfort. For those living with dementia, familiar sounds and routines like this can be grounding and uplifting.

Families are also welcomed into the Friday celebrations, and many pop in to join for a drink, a song, or simply to enjoy the atmosphere with their loved ones. Their presence adds even more warmth and connection to the afternoon.

As one staff member said:

“This is our residents’ home. We want them to continue enjoying the things they’ve always loved. If that includes a tipple on a Friday and a bit of a singalong, that’s exactly what we’ll do.”

Staff also benefit from the Friday tradition, with a takeaway of choice ‘on the house’ to enjoy during their break. It’s a simple but meaningful way for management to show appreciation and maintain team morale. A happy, supported team means better care, and Fridays remind everyone they’re part of something special.

Whiteford House Residents Have a Ball at Somerset Park!

Residents of Whiteford House recently had an unforgettable day out, cheering on their local club, Ayr United FC, as they faced Livingston FC at Somerset Park.

The match, a highly anticipated clash between two of the top three sides in the William Hill Championship, delivered and incredible day out for both staff and residents. Thanks to the generosity of Ayr United FC, residents received complimentary tickets, allowing them to soak up the electric atmosphere and experience the thrill of live football.

The trip was organised by Whiteford’s dedicated Activities Coordinator, Shirley, who reached out to the club to make this special day possible. From the roar of the crowd to the highs and lows of the game, residents relished every moment, proudly cheering on ‘The Honest Men’, and despite Ayr United not securing the win, the experience was one that residents will never forget. As residents reflected on the outing, it was clear that the game was enjoyed by all:

"It was a good wee day, I enjoyed watching the boys play football."

"Enjoyed the game and the warm pie."

"I enjoyed watching Livingston beat Ayr!"

While football was the highlight of the weekend, Whiteford House continues to offer a variety of enriching activities that bring residents together. The fun doesn’t stop sports and games at Whiteford House; residents regularly take part in creative workshops at Centre Stage (a local community activity group), art therapy sessions with visiting artists, and exercise classes led by in-house physiotherapist.

Enhance Healthcare is proud to announce that Townend Care Home has excelled in its latest inspection, reaffirming its commitment to outstanding care. This stunning Victorian-era home, set within acres of picturesque grounds in the beautiful village of Symington, recently underwent an unannounced inspection by the Care Inspectorate with some wonderful results.

The inspection, conducted on 14th and 15th January, focused on Leadership, Wellbeing, and Planning. Inspectors engaged with staff, residents, and visiting professionals while also reviewing documentation and observing daily practices. Townend maintained its already high standards with a score of 4 (Good) in both Wellbeing and Support Planning and further elevated its reputation by improving to a 5 (Very Good) in Leadership.

Inspectors praised the unwavering dedication of Townend’s staff, stating:

“We observed a caring and compassionate approach by all the staff team at Townend.”

They further highlighted the team's deep commitment to residents noting:

“There was an obvious passion for supporting and helping people with learning disabilities.”

The inspection also commended the strong relationships between staff and residents, emphasising that care was delivered with “respect and dignity.” Townend’s ability to provide highly personalised care was attributed to “a good standard of staffing” and “a consistent team of care staff”, an aspect of care that Enhance Healthcare prioritises across all its homes.

As part of the evaluation, the inspection examined how well residents’ care and support was planned. Townend utilises cutting-edge industry software alongside a suite of mobile devices, laptops, and desktop computers to ensure real-time, up-to-date care planning. This proactive approach was reflected in the inspectors’ findings who were pleased to note:

“Good details describing how individuals presented if they exhibited any stress and distress behaviours. Including how best the staff could deal with this in an effective and safe manner”

The report further emphasised that:

“People living in the care home benefited from being supported by a staff team who were caring, compassionate and competent at identifying people's healthcare needs.”

Townend’s leadership was also thoroughly assessed, with inspectors recognising the home as “a very well managed service with positive, proactive and responsive professional leadership in practice.”

The management team, led by Rory Wood, an experienced healthcare professional who took over as Manager in 2024, and Deputy Manager Stephanie Anderson—who has been with Townend for several years—was praised for its complementary and collaborative leadership style. Inspectors noted:

“The manager and deputy provided a good overview and complimented each other through supportive and professional working practices.”

Furthermore, the home’s commitment to quality assurance was highlighted as having a direct positive impact on resident outcomes. Inspectors found “good standards of practice” in quality assurance, reinforcing Townend’s reputation for excellence.

Townend Care Home’s latest inspection results are a testament to the dedication and expertise of its staff and leadership. Lochside Manor hits nail on head with new woodworking sessions!

Lochside Manor has launched an exciting new initiative aimed at fostering creativity, skill-building, and social engagement among its residents. Spearheaded by the home’s own maintenance man, Bobby, the woodworking and joinery sessions have quickly become a highlight for those taking part.

Residents of the 45-bed care home have been getting some hands-on experience crafting birdhouses, learning how to safely use tools, as well as developing their patience and teamwork along the way. As part of Lochside Manor’s dedication to meaningful engagement, the sessions have been designed to include individuals of all abilities, aligning with the home’s holistic approach to wellbeing.

One resident who has embraced the opportunity is 20-year-old Sean, a Lochside resident for the past two years. From the moment he was invited to take part, Sean was eager to begin, and as his project took shape, his enthusiasm only grew.

“It’s been a really good experience,” said Sean. “I’ve really enjoyed focusing on the details and learning patience with cutting and chiselling. It’s been very therapeutic.”

Staff members have also noticed the positive impact the sessions have had on Sean’s mood and confidence.

“It’s really helped Sean come out of his shell,” one team member shared. “He could sometimes experience low moods, but since starting woodworking, he’s been laughing, having fun, and seems so much more confident.”

The driving force behind the initiative, Bobby, has a deeply personal connection to his work at Lochside Manor. After a stroke ended his career running a construction business, he joined the home as a handyman 12 years ago. Recognising his natural rapport with residents, the team encouraged him to transition into a care role, where he has built strong relationships with both staff and residents.

“I started out with the older adults and then moved on to work with the younger ones for a new challenge,” Bobby explained. “We’ve all become really good friends; it’s more like a family.”

The success of the woodworking sessions has inspired Lochside Manor’s experienced manager, Kirsty Gibson, to expand the programme further.

“We have plans to introduce gardening, cooking, and painting sessions,” Kirsty revealed. “Our goal is to provide as many meaningful and engaging activities as possible for our residents, ensuring they have opportunities to develop new skills, express themselves, and enjoy their time here.”

With woodworking already proving to be a hit, Lochside Manor is looking forward to seeing how these new initiatives continue to enrich the lives of its residents.

Enhance Healthcare’s Arran View Home Brings Christmas Cheer with Record-Breaking Giving Tree Project!

In a heart-warming show of generosity, Enhance Healthcare’s Arran View Home has received an unprecedented level of support for its annual Giving Tree Project. The initiative, now in its 15th year, ensures that children across North Ayrshire who might otherwise go without have something special to unwrap this Christmas.

This year, the project received substantial donations from local and national organisations, including Clothing for Work , Caledonian Office Products and Spearhead Healthcare , alongside countless contributions from the incredible staff at Arran View and members of the local community. The donations, described as the largest ever received by the project, will enable the creation of age-appropriate gift bags filled with toys, books, clothes, sweets, and treats, valued at approximately £40-£50 each.

These efforts will make a significant impact in helping meet the needs of 672 children identified through local foodbanks, schools, and churches as being in need of support this year.

The Giving Tree Project was co-founded over 15 years ago by Arran View’s own Activities Coordinator, Lee-Ann Millar, alongside Carol Boyd from the Ayrshire Community Trust. The project invites community members to pick a tag from a Christmas tree, each representing a child’s age and gender, then purchase and return gifts to donation points where they are sorted and wrapped by Lee-Ann, and a dedicated team of office elves.

“There were so many children going without at Christmas, and we decided we had to do something to help,” said Lee-Ann.

Since its inception, the Giving Tree has grown tremendously, with trees now placed in schools, churches, businesses, and community spaces across North Ayrshire. Last year alone, the project provided 636 children with gift bags worth an estimated total of £30,000.

This year, the Giving Tree Appeal is being supported by local organisations including Saltcoats Link Up, Random Acts of Kindness, and the Argyle Community Centre Saltcoats, who have been instrumental in driving the initiative’s success.

Businesses, community groups, and individuals are encouraged to get involved by hosting their own Giving Tree or contributing to the appeal. The process is simple: choose a tag, purchase a gift, and return it to a donation point to help make a child’s Christmas magical.

“I would like to thank Enhance for allowing me to have the tree here at Arran View, as well as Manager Kerry and the entire admin team for their incredible support,” said Lee-Ann.

“The generosity shown by local businesses and residents is truly heart-warming and makes such a difference in a young person’s life.”

The staff have built incredibly strong, trust-based relationships with residents, putting them at the heart of their care and ensuring that each individual is treated with dignity and respect. From helping residents enrol in college courses to reuniting them with lost family members, the team at Clyde Valley consistently goes above and beyond in supporting the personal journeys of those in their care. Atlantic View Care Home Achieves Top Marks!

Atlantic View, Enhance Healthcare’s newest care setting, has received top marks in its first Care Inspection by the Scottish Care Inspectorate.

Atlantic View, which specialises in age related care, opened its doors to residents on 21st March of this year and has since gone from strength to strength, developing into a relaxed and nurturing environment for both staff and residents. The luxury care home scored an impressive five "Very Good" ratings across key areas, including Wellbeing, Leadership, Staff, Setting, and Care Assessment and Planning.

Inspectors arrived at the purpose-built care home for an unannounced three-day visit on 31st October and were immediately impressed by its stunning setting. Located in the historic town of Ayr, Atlantic View boasts 50 modern en-suite rooms, many offering sweeping views of the seafront and the Isle of Arran. Inspectors described the home as “clean and comfortable” with a “relaxed environment,” both of which contributed to the high standard of care provided.

In addition to the spacious, private rooms, inspectors were particularly impressed with the "multiple quality facilities" available to residents. These include a cinema, games room, multipurpose gym, and a fully furnished café where residents, families, and friends are welcome throughout the day. Inspectors also highlighted the home’s close proximity to local shops and leisure facilities, all within walking distance, as well as its open access to beautifully designed, Mediterranean-inspired gardens—features that, according to inspectors, "increase people’s sense of wellbeing."

Staff were another area of praise, with inspectors describing them as “experienced and knowledgeable” and commending their “commitment to high standards,” which helped foster a strong sense of community and a high level of care. The home’s comprehensive training and induction programme ensures staff are fully equipped to meet residents’ needs, with ongoing support from the management team. In interviews, staff expressed that they felt well-supported and had “time to do any tasks required,” with one staff member adding that Atlantic View is “a great place to work.” Inspectors also observed the “kind and respectful” relationships between staff and residents, with one resident commenting: “Staff know everyone and take their time with you; they always ask you and give you a choice.”

This commitment to high-quality, person-centred care was particularly evident during mealtimes, which were described as “sociable and pleasant.” The kitchen staff and chefs were praised for offering a variety of freshly cooked, tailor-made meals, all presented to a high standard in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Inspectors were also impressed by the discreet and respectful assistance provided to residents during mealtimes.

Care home manager Michelle Sommerville had this to say:

“Huge thanks to the full team who have went over and above in commissioning this service by striving for the highest standards possible. It’s a beautiful place for people to live and call home and we look forward to it’s continues success in the future”

Operations Manager Ashleigh Walmsley added:

"“It’s an outstanding achievement that Michelle and the full team at Atlantic have achieved for their first full Care Inspection. To hear the Care Inspectorate advise it’s a rarity to receive such a report this early during Atlantic’s first 7 months of opening is remarkable. I’m extremely proud of the team for creating an environment so welcoming and homely; I cannot wait what this service will achieve over the next year."

The celebrations were well and truly underway at Enhance’s Whiteford House last week as home marked their first anniversary.

Residents, families, and friends all gathered for a festive day filled with party games, singing, and dancing. Guests enjoyed a delicious buffet and reminisced through a slideshow highlighting the year’s memorable events.

Since opening its doors on October 23, 2023, this purpose-built home has provided care for 31 adults with complex health and mental conditions. Over the past year, Whiteford House has thrived, thanks in large part to the strong and positive relationships fostered between staff and residents. This bond was evident during the celebration, with many staff members returning on their days off to join in the festivities and honour this significant milestone.

Deputy Manager Lindsay Wood, who worked for the NHS for over 20 years before joining the team at Whiteford as a nurse, had this to say:

“It’s been amazing seeing this place go from an empty shell to a warm and welcoming home. I’m really proud and have loved every minute of it.”

Support worker Paul McConnell who was also here on Whiteford’s first day had this to say:

“I had never worked in care before so didn’t know what to expect but it’s been amazing. It’s been some journey. We’ve had our ups and downs, but It’s been a nice atmosphere and a great team. I’m happy to come in even when I’m not working because I want to be there!”

Home Manager Megan Borthwick expressed her gratitude, saying:

“I can’t believe it’s already been a year! It’s gone by in a flash. I’m so thankful to all the staff and residents for their support over the past year, and I’m excited to see what the next year holds for Whiteford House!”

Townend activities recognised for outstanding work!

Townend care home were “delighted” to find out that their remarkable Activities Team has been nominated at this year’s Scottish Care Awards! Nestled in the picturesque grounds on the outskirts of Symington, the dynamic duo, Sara-Louise Gregor and Leighann Bell have reached the final three in this years ‘Meaningful Activity Award’ category.

“We just found out we were in the final three last week. We thought it was a wind up! We’re just here doing our jobs!” they shared.

Over the past year, Sara-Louise and Leighann have worked tirelessly to build strong relationships with residents and forge connections within the community, creating vibrant opportunities for meaningful engagement.

At Townend, a bespoke 17-bed care home specialising in support for adults with learning disabilities, every activity is thoughtfully designed around residents’ interests.

“All our activities are resident-led. We focus on what they want to do and how we can brighten their day,” they explained.

One standout event involved renting out an entire arena for residents to experience all-ability biking:

“They have bikes for everyone so no matter what your health conditions, you can take part. It was amazing to see, and the residents were absolutely made up”

“Every day is different and goes by in a flash. We’re not just ticking boxes; we want to bring smiles. You truly feel like you’re making a difference.” they added.

Another popular activity was inclusive football sessions with the Killie Trust, which ended with an exciting tour of Kilmarnock Football Club’s stadium. These impactful experiences were key to their nomination:

“The activities team go above and beyond; empowering people to exercise their basic human rights, as well as promoting people’s independence, and providing opportunities for people to be involved”.

Sara-Louise and Leighann also highlighted the unwavering support from their colleagues at Townend:

“It might sound cheesy, but we feel like part of the Townend family. All the staff pitch in with activities, so things don’t just stop when we aren’t here”

Ecstatic Townend manager Rory Wood had this to say:

“We are thrilled to have received the nomination. It is a wonderful recognition of the hard work and dedication of our superb activities team! The team always goes above and beyond to ensure our residents lead meaningful and fulfilling lives”.

Since being acquired by Enhance Healthcare two years ago, the stunning sandstone property has seen thoughtful renovations and is currently undergoing works to create a new, tailor-made unit. Operations Manager Ashleigh Walmsley had this to say:

“You walk into Townend and are immediately met with enthusiasm; the Activities team within this service exude care and thoughtfulness in every bit of their coordination, planning and one-to-one interactions to be able to make their activities as bespoke and person centred as possible. This nomination doesn’t just highlight their hard work but the outcomes the residents at Townend receive.”

Clyde Valley nominated for top award

The staff at Clyde Valley Care Home were "over the moon" to hear about their nomination for this year’s Specialist Service/Unit of the Year award at the Scottish Care Awards. Situated in the stunning Monteith House in Lanarkshire, they have been invited to attend the glitzy awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow on 15th November, where they will find out if they have won this prestigious award.

This 33-bed care service specialises in supporting young adults with severe mental health diagnoses and/or learning difficulties in the heart of Scotland. Nestled within over 70 acres of mature woodland and fields, Clyde Valley Care Home resides in a beautifully retrofitted 200-year-old mansion designed to meet the needs of both residents and staff.

Staff expressed their gratitude for the nomination, stating:

"We’re really thankful for the recognition for the work we do. It’s our job, and we love it."

It was this dedication that was highlighted by their nominee, who noted that "the respect, dignity, compassion, kindness, and understanding provided by our team is ‘above and beyond’ all expectations."

Manager Billy Russell, who has been with the home for over 10 years, praised his amazing staff:

"We’re delighted that all our hard work has been recognized. Our staff have been here for a long time, and to see them nominated for the incredible things they do every day is brilliant."

The well-established team focuses on creating a warm, nurturing environment where residents can achieve their goals and maintain their independence:

"It’s more like a family here with all the staff and residents. Many of our residents don’t have family, so we’re happy to step into that role. They have us, and we have them."

When asked how the nomination came about, Billy credited his dedicated staff and the support from the directors at Enhance Healthcare:

"They’ve been superb. They make a point of getting to know you and check in regularly to ensure you have everything you need."

Clyde Valley was one of the first homes purchased by Enhance back in 2016, and it has gone from strength to strength since then. Operations Manager Ashleigh Walmsley had this to say:

“Visiting Clyde Valley is always met with warmth by not only the staff but also the residents themselves who are more than happy to demonstrate and display their crafts or achievements; working alongside Home Manager Billy Russell through the years has been nothing short of a joy, so to see him, his team and all of their hard work recognised brings a huge amount of happiness not only to myself but our Enhance Healthcare peers.”

Whiteford House, shines in first care inspectorate report.

Enhance Scotland's Whiteford House has received a glowing report from its first visit by the Care Inspectorate. The home was awarded four grade 5 'Very Good' grades and one grade 4 'Good' grade in the report which was compiled during an unannounced 3-day visit to the Ayrshire care setting in September.

Staff were praised by Inspectors who were impressed with the "very positive relationships" that the team had cultivated with residents and noted from their observations that staff had "a great knowledge" of the individuals living in the service. The strong relationship between staff and service users contributed to building positive outcomes as well a reduction in specific challenging behaviours. Families found that as a result of these relationships, transitions to and from Whiteford House were easier for both service users and for the family as a whole. Feedback from relatives remarked on the "caring nature" of the staff and how "staff make their relatives smile". The Care Inspectorate were assured to see that "people could be confident that the right staff were being employed to provide their care".

The environment itself made an impression on the Inspectors who described it as"welcoming, homely, and tastefully decorated". Whiteford House, which opened its doors in October 2023, is a purpose-built care setting which provides person centred care to 31 adults with complex health and mental health requirements. As such, the home has been furnished with contemporary bedrooms, spacious lounges and dining areas where residents are able to "socialise if they choose", as well as kitchenette areas where service users are able to make their own food encouraging them to "maintain their independence" or enjoy meals made by an in-house chef. This strong sense of independence was evident in service users bedrooms which are "their own private space" which people are encouraged to "personalise…how they wish".

The management at Whiteford House, led by Megan Borthwick, and deputy manager Lindsay Wood, were also praised as being "approachable" by staff, service users, and families/friends as well as "responsive" to any queries or concerns. The Care Inspectorate recognised that management were aware of the importance of fostering positive relationships not only with the people living in the home, but with staff and families as well. These "good relationships" were also evident with external professionals such as GP's, nurses, and social workers. Inspectors were pleased to see that feedback forms were used to continue the drive of high standards throughout the home and that "information collated was used to improve the service". Management were also praised for having “very good quality assurances systems in place which informed the service development plan”. Inspectors noted that “management had very good oversight of the service and everyone found them approachable”.

Management and care staff were not the only members of the team to impress the inspectors who commented that the dedicated activities worker was a "real strength" to the service. Activities within the home make use of the many designated activity rooms including the cinema room, games room, and a sensory room where residents can relax. Service users are also encouraged to access the wider community via group outings or one-to-one trips making good use of the dedicated minibus. Inspectors were impressed to see "evidence of people achieving their outcomes and goals and the positive impact this had on them, developing life skills and improving confidence and social circles". This was as a direct result of service users being "fully consulted on activities".

Home manager Megan Borthwick commented: “I’m really proud of the whole team. We’ve all worked so hard over the past year to make sure that Whiteford is not only a great place live but a great place to work as well. We are looking forward to celebrating our one-year anniversary at the end of October, so we’ll have something else to celebrate now as well.”

Staff and residents from Heathfield House visited the Heathfield Early Years Centre this morning

We enjoyed a tea party and sang a few songs along with the children and the staff, which was so nice. Our hosts could not have been better, we were spoiled.

The relationship we have built with Heathfield Early Years has meant so much to our home and we look forward to developing this more into the future.

We would like to thank all the staff at Heathfield for their great efforts and wonderful kindness.

All the children were so polite and inviting, a great credit to the school and their parents.
